Cash strapped council splashing out on new telephones

Lib Dems in Gloucestershire have today challenged the Conservatives over costs to upgrade county council’s phone system.

The project, agreed today by the Conservative Cabinet at Shire Hall, is expected to cost the council over £1million with an end of life date of 2022.

The Liberal Democrat Spokesperson for Finance and Change, Cllr. Klara Sudbury (LD: Charlton Park and College) said:

"Gloucestershire Lib Dems recognise the need for a reliable telephone system, particularly for those vulnerable residents who need to contact the council.

“However, we have not been presented with evidence that the current system is failing. We have simply been told that the system is old and at risk of failing.
“At a time when vital front line services are under review, spending over £1m on a new telephone system for shire hall may not be the top priority for hard pressed council tax payers."
