The Liberal Democrats have welcomed the approach of moving away from using a single highways provider.
Liberal Democrat Spokesperson for Highways, Cllr. Bernie Fisher (St Paul’s & Swindon) said:
“Finally, we may actually start to see real improvements to the county’s roads. We welcome the decision to see a new approach that doesn’t rely solely on one contractor as has been the case with Amey.
“Over the next 18 months, it will be interesting to see the proposals being put forward by providers in how they can efficiently maintain the county’s highways. Over the years, the maintenance work undertaken in terms of repairing damaged roads, cutting back verges and grass has at times been below adequate.
“I would hope that by not using just one organisation, the county council will have tighter controls on the contracts with the successful providers, in order for them to monitor and complete their projects on time and to a high standard.
“We will continue to monitor the process and look forward to the day when our roads become the envy of other areas.”
