Fighting for Fair School Funding!

Gloucestershire Liberal Democrats are demanding fairer funding for Gloucestershire’s schools.

Help us fund schools fairly by SIGNING OUR PETITION below!

Since assuming power in 2015 the Conservatives have slashed school funding, such that our county’s schools will have lost over £11 million in real terms by 2020.2  That’s nearly £150 for every single child aged 5-18 in the county.

This massive reduction in money has resulted in many schools increasing class sizes, cutting staff and subjects and even reducing the number of SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disability) children they will take.

Furthermore, nearly 20 schools in the county are not even receiving the minimum per-pupil funding promised by the Conservative government – a minimum funding that the Balcarras Headteacher decried as “not enough to run a school” in his letter to Cllr Hawthorne last year.

Gloucestershire Liberal Democrats will be bringing a motion to the County Council on 27 March 2019, calling for the leader to take these concerns to the national government, and to call on the Government to allocate more money in the 2019 Spending Review.

Launching this campaign, Cllr Paul Hodgkinson, Gloucestershire Lib Dem Group Leader, said:

“The Conservative obsession with austerity has led to Gloucestershire’s schools losing over £11 million in real terms since 2015.

“This has led to larger class sizes, the cutting of subjects and schools having to choose between paying for staff or repairing leaking roofs. We’ve even heard some schools stating that they will reduce the number of Special Educations Needs and Disability places because they can’t afford to take them on.

“Last week we saw more than 7,000 headteachers send letters home to parents warning about the shortfall in funding their schools are facing.  That’s why we are calling for the leader of Gloucestershire County Council to join the education professionals in holding the Conservative Government to account, and demanding an increase to school funding.”
